The short answer

  • Ask when the meal is over and the guest is relaxed, usually when the check is dropped, not mid-meal.
  • Put a tap stand where it can be used at that moment: on the table, at the host stand, the bar and the pickup counter.
  • Servers can invite guests to review, but Google's rules say no review quotas for staff and no asking guests to mention a server by name.
  • Never offer a free dessert, drink or discount for a review. Catch complaints at the table and give guests a private way to reach a manager.

Why reviews matter so much for restaurants

Picking a restaurant is a same-hour decision. Someone searches “tacos near me” from the sidewalk, glances at the map and picks from the top few based on stars, review count and how recent the reviews are. Google also says more reviews and positive ratings can help a business’s local ranking. The good news: you serve dozens of happy guests a day. You just need a small share of them to review.

When to ask

Ask at the end of the meal, when the guest is relaxed. Never mid-meal.

And any time a guest compliments the food unprompted, that’s your moment.

Where to put a stand

A tap stand works in the low light of dinner service, where QR codes struggle. Start with the host stand, the register and a few busy tables, then add more where they get used:

  • Tables, next to where the check lands
  • Host stand, for guests on the way out
  • Bar, every few seats
  • Register and pickup counter, where phones are already out

Keep the ask simple

Servers can mention the stand when they drop the check. Keep it an invitation. Google’s rules don’t allow review quotas for staff, asking guests to mention a server by name, or offering a free dessert or discount for a review. You don’t need any of that: a well-timed ask and a one-tap stand do the job.

Catch complaints at the table

Most one-star restaurant reviews describe something that could have been fixed on the spot: cold food, a long wait, a wrong order. Check back within two bites, and give guests a private way to reach a manager. More in how to prevent bad reviews.

How RepuTap helps

A RepuTap stand on the table turns the end of a good meal into a Google review in seconds. Guests see your restaurant’s name and photo, rate the meal, and tap through to Google. Guests who had a bad night get a private “Let the Owner Know” option, and you get an alert, sometimes while they’re still in the building.

Frequently asked questions

Can my restaurant give a free dessert or discount for a Google review?

No. Google prohibits offering incentives, including discounts and free food, in exchange for posting any review, positive or not. It's one of the most common violations in restaurants.

Should servers ask guests for reviews?

They can invite guests warmly and briefly, for example when dropping the check. Under Google's policy, don't set review quotas for staff and don't have servers ask guests to mention them by name in the review.

When is the best time to ask a restaurant guest for a review?

When the meal is finished and the guest is relaxed, usually as the check arrives or while they're paying. That's when the experience is fresh and their phone is often already in hand.

Should I ask for Yelp reviews too?

Yelp's guidelines ask businesses not to solicit reviews, so most restaurants focus their ask on Google. You can still let guests who prefer Yelp or TripAdvisor choose those sites themselves.

How do I get reviews from takeout and delivery customers?

Add a short line and a QR code or link to the receipt or bag insert, and put a tap stand at the pickup counter for customers waiting on orders.
